Thrilled to to announce that The Girl Who Walked on Snow, by Bruno Carnide, has been selected for the Official Selection at Curtas em Flagrante / Travelling Festival of Short Films from Portuguese-speaking Countries.

The Girl Who Walked on Snow, aka A Rapariga que Caminhava sobre a Neve, is an animation short film made with AI Artificial Intelligence premiered at festivals eligible for the EFA (European Film Awards) and the Oscars (Academy Awards)

Director Statement:

The Girl Who Walked on Snow” is a cinematic work that transcends the boundaries between the artist and the machine, a unique and harmonious collaboration between human creativity and the innovative potential of artificial intelligence.

In this distant place, we delve into the life of the saddest of girls, whose journey is portrayed through 34 animation shots generated by AI and carefully selected from over two thousand shots generated through specific instructions to illustrate the narrative. We firmly believe that AI is not a threat to artistic authenticity but a tool that enhances creative capabilities.

Behind the digital curtains, over several months of work, human artists played a crucial role in directing, editing, compositing, coloring, and creating visual effects for the generated images, as well as in all aspects that make this narrative unique, such as the script, soundtrack; and every element, from narration, sound to graphic design, was meticulously crafted and created by humans.

“The Girl Who Walked on Snow” is not just a film; it is a testimony to the balance between technological innovation and artistic expression. The title not only suggests the journey of our protagonist but also highlights the path of AI alongside human creativity.

We hope this work serves as a source of inspiration and reflection on the collaborative potential between humans and machines.

Bruno Carnide (Leiria, Portugal, 1987) is a film director and producer, and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
Twice nominated for the Sophia Awards of the Portuguese Academy of Cinema, he develops an auteur body of work that crosses fiction, animation and documentary, exploring themes such as memory, identity and the materiality of the image, frequently resorting to analogue film as a narrative element, one of the distinctive hallmarks of his cinematic language.

His films have received more than 50 awards and have been selected for more than 400 film festivals in over 50 countries, including Oscras® and European Film Awards qualifying festivals, among which stand out A-list festivals such as ZINEBI (Spain), InterFilm (Germany), Tirana (Albania), Huesca (Spain), Izmir (Turkey), CineLebu (Chile), Drama (Greece), Tehran (Iran) and St. Louis (USA), as well as Portuguese festivals such as IndieLisboa, Cinanima, Monstra, MOTELX and FEST.
He has been the founding director and programmer of Leiria Film Fest – International Short Film Festival since 2013, holds the Specialist Title in Film Production, is a university lecturer in the field of Cinema, regularly serves as a jury member at several international festivals, and was curator of the Museum of the Moving Image of Leiria between 2022 and 2024.
He works in the direction of corporate films, advertising and audiovisual content, having signed hundreds of productions for brands such as Google, MTV, Nickelodeon, RTP, Volkswagen, Ford and Schweppes.
His filmography includes the short films “Memories of an Empty House” (2023), “Fled. Lay. Fell.” (2017), both shot on Super8 film, and the animated short film “The Flight of the Manta Rays” (2021).
