Gentian Doda

Gentian Doda is an artist whose creative practice blends dance, film, and installation art. Born in Tirana, Albania, his career began in some of Europe’s most prestigious dance companies, where he worked with renowned choreographers such as Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Ohad Naharin, Wim Vandekeybus, and Maurice Béjart, among others. He culminated his dance career at the Compañia Nacional de Danza in Spain, where he also began his choreographic journey in 2005.
Throughout his career, Doda has focused on exploring the inner frictions of individuals amidst the latent contradictions of contemporary society, making these conflicts visible and palpable in his work. His creative practice often draws on past histories and collective memory, connecting them to current themes. His poetic approach weaves together the past and present, where contemporary aesthetics intertwine with echoes of history, creating a space for reflection and resonance.
With years of experience spanning some of the world’s most prestigious classical dance companies to independent and alternative projects, Doda has created works for institutions such as the Juilliard School in New York, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Greek National Ballet, Staatsballett Berlin, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Staatsballett Nürenberg, Gärtnerplatztheater, Prado Museum, Sónar Electronic Music Festival, and Madrid en Danza Festival, among others.
Having served as Chief Ballet Master and co-director alongside Nacho Duato at Staatsballett Berlin, Doda founded the international collective ‘was bleibt kollektiv | Gentian Doda’ in 2021. He later ventured into the world of film and installation art, achieving quick recognition with his debut short film Gjurmë (Trails), which received widespread acclaim at international film festivals. He recently participated in the Biennale di Venezia Arte 2024, collaborating with the Mexican Pavilion, and premiered his short film 303.
Doda’s creative works have earned acclaim from both audiences and critics, bringing him several prestigious awards, including the First Choreographic Awards in Copenhagen and Hannover, the Scapino Production Prize, Best Direction at the WILDsound Festival, Best Experimental Short at the European Short Film Festival, and recognition as a Finalist at the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2023.
