Synopsis:
Beñat, a harrijasotzaile (traditional Basque stone lifter) and ex-convict, is still reeling from the recent death of his wife while trying to raise his daughter Malen alone. Things get complicated when Sara, the girl’s grandmother, files for full custody to protect her from a father she believes to be violent. Caught between grief, guilt, and a desperate need for redemption, Beñat faces a past full of secrets, half-truths, and hidden crimes.

Sinopsis:
Tras la muerte de su mujer, Beñat, un exconvicto y levantador de piedras vasco, intenta criar solo a su hija. Pero cuando la abuela reclama su custodia, el pasado y la culpa reaparecen, obligándole a enfrentarse a sus propios fantasmas. 

Director’s Statement:
AITÄ was born from a desire to explore the weight of silence, trauma, and the hidden family secrets that shape who we are. Through the story of Beñat and his daughter Malen, we wanted to portray how guilt, loss, and the need for redemption can coexist within the same emotional space.
We were drawn to the way past wounds echo through generations — and how, even in the midst of pain, moments of love and connection can emerge. AITÄ delves into the complexity of family bonds, the tension between inherited loyalties and chosen ones, and the pursuit of truth as the only path toward reconciliation.
The Basque landscape, with its rough beauty and emotional restraint, became more than a setting — it mirrors the characters’ inner worlds. Every stone Beñat lifts represents the weight of memory: what we try to carry, and what we must finally let go.
Our goal was to create an intimate and emotionally charged film that reflects both the fragility and the strength of the human spirit. A story that invites the audience to face their own truths and to believe that, even in the darkest moments, there is always room for redemption.

Notas del Director:
AITÄ es una película que nace del deseo de explorar el peso del silencio, el trauma y los secretos familiares que moldean nuestra identidad. A través de la historia de Beñat y su hija Malen, quisimos retratar cómo la culpa, la pérdida y la necesidad de redención pueden convivir en un mismo espacio emocional.
Nos interesa el modo en que las heridas del pasado afectan a las nuevas generaciones y cómo, incluso en medio del dolor, pueden surgir gestos de amor y esperanza. AITÄ habla de la complejidad de las relaciones familiares, de la tensión entre las familias de origen y las que elegimos, y de la búsqueda de la verdad como único camino hacia la reconciliación.
El contexto vasco, con su paisaje duro y su contención emocional, nos permitía construir una atmósfera donde lo que no se dice tiene tanto peso como las palabras. Cada piedra que levanta Beñat simboliza el peso de la memoria, aquello que uno intenta sostener, pero también aquello de lo que necesita liberarse.
Nuestra intención ha sido crear una película íntima, intensa y profundamente humana. Un retrato de la fragilidad y la fuerza que coexisten en cada persona, y una invitación a mirar dentro de nosotros mismos: a enfrentarnos a nuestras verdades incómodas y a reconocer que, incluso en la oscuridad, siempre existe una posibilidad de redención.
